Salt Therapy in Borehamwood: What Is Halotherapy and What to Expect at Your First Visit

New to salt therapy? Learn what halotherapy is, how our adult and family room sessions work, and what to expect at Crystal Salt Cave in Borehamwood.

If you have seen a salt cave or salt room advertised and wondered what actually happens inside, you are not alone. Salt therapy, also called halotherapy, is one of those things that sounds unusual until you have tried it. This guide explains what it is, how our sessions work, and what to expect on your first visit to Crystal Salt Cave in Borehamwood.

What is salt therapy (halotherapy)?

The word "halotherapy" comes from the Greek word for salt. In a salt therapy session, you relax in a room where the air carries fine salt particles or a light saline mist. The idea draws on the long tradition of spending time in natural salt environments, such as salt mines and coastal air, and brings it into a calm, controlled indoor space.

There are two main ways salt is introduced into the air, and we use both at Crystal Salt Cave:

- Dry salt: a halogenerator grinds salt into very fine particles and releases them into the room.
- Saline mist: a saline water machine produces a fine mist of salt water that you breathe in as you relax.

What is a session like?

Mostly, it is about slowing down. You settle into a comfortable chair, breathe the salty air and switch off for a while. There is nothing to do and nothing to set up. Many of our visitors tell us it is one of the few places in their week where they are not looking at a screen.

The adult room

Our adult room is designed for quiet and comfort. It has four massage chairs, a halogenerator for dry salt, and an isotonic saline water machine. If you are looking for a peaceful break from a busy day, this is the room for you.

The family room

Not every parent can slip away for an hour of quiet, so we created a room where the whole family can come together. Our family room is for families with children up to 12 years old. It uses a saline water machine (nebuliser) only, and there are toys inside so children can play while they are there. Parents have seven massage chairs, so you can sit back and relax while your little ones are entertained.

Who is salt therapy for?

People visit for many reasons: to unwind, to build a relaxing routine into the week, or simply to try something different. Some people come after a long week at work. Others bring the children for a calm activity that is easy to fit around the school run.

A quick note: salt therapy is a complementary wellness experience. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace advice from your GP or other healthcare professional. If you or your child has a health condition, or you are unsure whether a session is right for you, please speak to your doctor first.

Tips for your first visit

- Wear comfortable clothing so you can sit back and relax.
- Arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushing when your session begins.
- Let your phone rest. The quieter you keep things, the more you will get out of the time.
- If you are coming with children, choose the family room, which is set up for kids up to 12.
